Martin De Porres

The sisters of the Community of St. Francis regularly volunteer at the Martin de Porres House of Hospitality, which is known as a free restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch. It's plant laden courtyard, kitschy atmosphere and ragged clientele made me feel right at home. Cutting open cases of turkey sausage I had my first wave of homesickness for the Tacoma Catholic Worker sweep over me.
There wasn't enough work in the kitchen to keep me occupied long enough to meet many of the members who intentionally live together in community, some upstairs from the soup kitchen and some in another house, but those who I did meet were warm and welcoming and shared pictures of the Dali Lama's visit to Martins.
